If you looking to create a potent bath soak look no further than our magnesium chloride flakes. These are made of dry magnesium chloride, which makes your bath soaks/salts much more absorbable and effective than plain Epsom salts. These magnesium salt flakes have approximately 15g of absorbable magnesium per cup.
Why Zechstein Magnesium Flakes?
Zechstein magnesium flakes are sourced from the Zechstein seabed, over 1600 meters beneath the surface in northern Europe. Zechstein magnesium is known for its high level of purity and efficacy. Our magnesium bath flakes are fee from impurities, pollutants and contaminants.
Magnesium chloride flakes differ from magnesium sulfate, in the quality and absorption rate of the magnesium. Our bulk Epsom salts make a great carrier and base for bath salts, soaks, scrubs, bath fizzies and more, but magnesium flakes are the true product to use if you really want to have an effective level of magnesium in your soaks. Our magnesium flakes will boost the effectiveness of your magnesium treatments.
As a note, magnesium flakes are active all the time, so when exposed to the air they will start to absorb moisture. If you haven’t accessed your store of magnesium flakes in a while and find them moist, no worries. Just add them to your formulas as usual. They don’t lose their effectiveness when absorbing moisture from the air. For this reason, we do suggest that you add them to your bath formulas last.
Levels of Usage:
Dissolve 1-3 cups or more of your bath soak blend or pure magnesium flakes in a warm, not hot, bath. Hot water causes the skin to sweat which expels toxins and prevents the body from absorbing as much magnesium as possible, so warm water is best.
Foot soaks: dissolve 1 cup to full basin of warm water.
Soluble body care products: you can dissolve the magnesium flakes in water to create a liquid solution, or you can purchase our already pre-dissolved Magnesium Oil, also created with Zechstein Magnesium. 30-35% is the normal concentration in finished liquid magnesium formulas.
To use the flakes in a liquid formula you will do the following:
- Warm distilled water to 50-60°C/122-140°F.
- Do not allow water to boil. That is too hot and you will decrease the effectiveness of the magnesium flakes
- Measure out the percentage of magnesium you want in your finished formula. Do all your measurements by weight, not by spoonful’s.
- Gradually add in flakes, stirring gently to incorporate and melt.
- Allow to cool.
- Finished pH is best at 5.0-5.5
To incorporate the bath flakes into a bath soak or bath bomb- this can be a little tricky since Magnesium Flakes love to absorb all moisture!
Magnesium is a critical mineral for our bodies and almost all of us are deficient. Increased magnesium levels are said to help with:
- Bone density
- Muscle strains/aches
- Improved athletic performance
- Improved cardiovascular health
- PMS/Menstrual difficulties
- Sleep disorders
- ADHD
- Headaches
- Diabetes
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
The regular use of magnesium-based bath salts can help increase the body’s magnesium levels. Our skin is our biggest organ and incorporating regular baths with magnesium flakes is the ideal way to absorb the mineral without having digestive or oral absorption issues. When using magnesium salts, it is suggested to not have a super hot bath. You don’t want to be sweating, as that is your body’s way of expelling. You want the water just warm enough to open the pores and allow the skin to absorb; if you are sweating, you won’t suck up the magnesium.
Magnesium Bath Soak Formula Suggestions:
50% Magnesium flakes
25% Epsom Salt
5% Citric acid– for fizzing bath soaks or
5% SLSA powder or SCI Needles for foaming bath soaks
Step 1- blend Epsom salt and pink Himalayan sea salt together and mix well. You can use whichever salt blend in this you would like. We have some fabulous Pacific Northwest Sea Salts that would be excellent. If you chose either Dead Sea or Pink Himalayan, please be sure to use mostly the fine grind as these will dissolve in the water. You can incorporate a small amount of the coarse grind of either for esthetics, but not too much as they won’t dissolve in a bath.
Step 2- Scent your salts. This is where you add the scent and go small. Bath soaks get about 0.25-0.5% scent load max! Not like skincare products as salts soak up and deliver the scent load easier. This means to a 10-pound batch of bath salts (this is your finished amount), you will use 0.025 pounds of scent. That is 0.4 pounds, so not a lot! Sprinkle the scent over the top surface of your salts and mix away.
Step 3-add in citric acid, sodium bicarb and SLSA/SCI if you are going to add a surfactant. Mix well with the pre-scented dry salts.
This is the stage where you can add more scent should you feel you need some. This is also where you can add any other liquids. You can blend in oils like Organic Babassu or Organic Coconut; you can add Lumorol K to create foaming action; you can add in any carrier oil like Grapeseed Oil, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, USA Grown Sweet Almond Oil….anything you’d like. Start small as a little liquid goes a long way with bath soaks. You also don’t want your finished soak to be too soggy.
Final step- blend in your magnesium flakes. This will be your last step so that the magnesium flakes don’t absorb too much of the liquid portion of your formula.
Pure Zechstein Magnesium Flakes are sold in 1-pound bio-degradable bags, 5-pound bags and 35-pound buckets.
