What are the ways you can use citric acid?
Citric acid is used in many skincare an soap formulas.
- Often it is used as a pH adjuster
- Bath bombs to add the fizz
- Laundry washing detergent to soften the water,
- Soaps for pH adjusting and chelating properties
How much citric acid do you use to adjust pH?
This really all depends on what the pH is and how far you need to adjust it. A citric acid solution is used to lower the pH in your products. You can use this as your pH adjuster for all kinds of products, including shampoos, conditioner, facial serums, creams, lotions, soap bars, extracts, cleansers, toners, masks, bubble bath, laundry detergent, and more.
You will never add dry citric acid to your formula to adjust the pH; you will always create a solution and add that in small increments to your product until you reach your desired pH. You can add citric acid dry into products like bath bombs, bath soaks, and laundry detergent powder.
How to make a citric acid solution?
You can have varying degrees of strength on this solution; the only key is once you have created the solution you like, make that same solution for every batch. Don’t make a 10% solution one time and then a 20% solution the next as your products will not turn out the same.
To make the citric acid solution simply measure out the amount of water and the amount of citric for your desired percentage of strength. An example is for the 10% solution:
- 10g by weight citric acid
- 90g by weight deionized or distilled water
Simply blend together and mix until the citric acid is completely dissolved.
How do I add the citric acid solution to my formula?
You will blend together your entire formula and test the pH before ever adding the citric acid solution. Test the pH of your product first. You will then add a few drops of the citric acid solution and re-test. It does not take a lot to alter the pH so go slow. Once you’re at the desired pH, allow the product to sit untouched for 5-10 minutes and re-test.
You can then seal up your citric acid solution and use it again. You do not have to make a new solution each time.
Why would I use citric acid in cold process soap?
Citric acid is added to cold process soaps to make them soften on the skin, to rinse cleaner off the skin, to reduce mineral buildup, and to last longer in hard water. When working with citric acid in soap bars you may have to adjust by increasing the amount of lye used. Too much citric acid and not compensating with lye can create very soft bars.
Typical usage levels for soap bars is 0.5-2% of the weight of the oil.
Typical increase in lye is 0.624g of lye for every 1g of citric acid used.
How to add citric acid to my soap bars?
Once you have determined how much citric acid you want to use, then you’ll figure out how much additional lye to use.
- Measure out your water. Always go by weight not by volume
- Add in citric acid and mix well to dissolve
- Slowly add in lye
- Continue making your soap as normal
Can citric acid speed up trace?
Maybe a small amount but nothing noticeable. Trace is more effected by fragrance, fatty acid profile and amount of lye water used.
You can use citric acid granules to reduce the pH of your handmade soap bars or liquid soap.
Citric acid granules are excellent for combining with sodium bicarbonate and adding to bath bombs, bath fizzies and bath soaks. Citric acid will create a slightly fizzing effect in the water, especially when used with sodium bicarbonate. You can play around with the quantities of each until you get the desired fizziness!

Try creating a dry scrub and adding citric acid granules to boost the scrubbing effect and help lighten the skin.
