Our in-house Melt and Pour Shampoo is the easiest way to create your own shampoo bars! This is a direct comparison to Syndopour 200 MB. They changed their formula, adding ingredients we didn’t like, so we created our own. This base is designed for you to customize by adding hair additives, oils, activated charcoal, scent (fragrance or essential oil) up to 10% of the total formula.
We do have both Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate in this blend as it does contain water (in both pure water and as part of the vegetable glycerin) and we want to ensure your finished products don’t have any issues with a long shelf life. Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate are both extremely stable, extremely natural, food grade preservatives. When used together, they create a complete broad-spectrum preservative system. Consider using them as your preservative system in any water and oil emulsified formula.
Shampoo and Conditioner Bars are so lovely, and I know many of you want to include them in your line.
Melt and Pour Shampoo Base is the easiest way to start making your own shampoo bars. This is a melt and pour shampoo base, just like the soap bases we carry, and it is a ready-made shampoo bar that you can add all your special ingredients to and call it yours. Simply melt this down gently in a double boiler (don’t let it burn), then add in your ingredients, and pour into your molds. Or, if you don’t want to get fancy, you can use this shampoo base as is or just simply add some scent to it. Voila! Shampoo Bar.
Processing Guidelines for Shampoo Bars:
Gently melt the base. You want to do this in a double boiler so it is nice and cool. Recommend melting point is 75.55°C/168°F. It can get hot fast so be sure to keep it on low and use your thermometer to watch it.
Mix frequently as it is melting so it evenly heats throughout the pan.
It will become translucent when melted but will return to opaque when cold. If you add colors to the bar, know that the colors will be solid and not translucent in the finished bar.
Add in your goodies! You can add ingredients like dl Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Rice or Hemp Proteins, Daikon Seed Oil, Organic Baobab Oil, Organic Argan Oil, Apricot Oil, Sesame Oil, Calendula Oil, and essential oils like Manuka Oil, Tea Tree Essential Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil, or fragrances like our Coconut Island or Wild Rose. Actives can be done at 2-6%; oils can be 2-5%; fragrances and essential oils it is suggested at 2% or less.
Once it is to the formula you want, cool down to 70-80°c/158-176°F then pour it into your molds and let it set up! It is best to allow them to sit in their molds for about 24 hours or longer, as that is when they release easier.
Now, don’t stop at just shampoo bars. This melt and pour base is also an excellent option for shaving soaps and shaving bars, scrubbing bars like salt or sugar bars, and even as a base for a body wash.
You can also use this melt and pour shampoo base for your compressed shampoo bars. Simply use this as a binder once you have all your ingredients together. Using this as the binder for your dry ingredients will simply increase the foamability and moisture component of your finished bar. This is simply a tool to add to your tool chest when creating your custom products.
Any of our essential oils and any of our fragrances can be used in this melt and pour shampoo base. The ones I listed were just an example but feel free to use any and all of them! Well, maybe not all in one bar….
