Olivem1000® MB is a PEG-free, naturally derived self-thickening emulsifying agent designed to make oil and water emulsions easier. Olivem1000® MB is ideal for lotions, creams, balms and cleansing oils. This is a natural alternative to traditional Emulsifying Wax, if you are looking for a product that does not have any residual solvents.
How is Olivem1000® MB made?
Olivem1000® MB is derived from saponified fats of olive oils. This is a sustainable product the olive oil is what is leftover after all the pressings for traditional olive oils. The fats are then saponified to create Olivem1000® MB. This is a great aspect for marketing your products as upcycled ingredients are more sustainable and create less product waste.
Can I create a foaming facial oil cleanser using Olivem1000® MB?
Yes! If this is on your bucket list of products, Olivem1000® MB is an ideal emulsifier for this. Foaming Facial Cleansers are excellent for your skin as they are more gentle and do not disrupt the sebum balance like traditional foaming cleansers do. Olivem1000® MB will create a product that self-emulsifies with water contact.
Suggested ratio for an oil/cream to foaming cleanser:
10% Olivem1000® MB
20% Carrier Oils (Hazelnut, Jojoba, Olive, Grapeseed)
5% Coconut Oil 76 for a thicker cream or MCT oil for a more fluid cream
60% Distilled Water
2% 1,3 Propanediol
1% Vitamin E
0.5% BDHA Preservative
Will my product turn white if I used Olivem1000® MB?
Yes, if you’re using this to create an oil based product that will self-emulsify with water contact, the product will turn white at the time of use. It will remain your oil color until it comes in contact with water, then it will turn white.
When used in oil/water emulsified products such as lotions and creams, those will be white from the time you make them.
How do I used Olivem1000® MB?
Generally it is recommended to incorporate Olivem1000® MB into the oil phase of your formula, however, there is a lot of talk about adding into the water phase to reduce the soapiness. This often minimizes that effect, making it an incredible natural self-emulsifying agent.
In addition, it is recommended by users to heat both the oil and the water to 70°C/158°F, then blending together and maintaining that temperature while mixing for about 15 minutes at high speed. This allows the emulsifying agent to get completely blended in. After this 15 minutes gradually cool while slowing the mixing speed.
Do I need to add a thickener if I use Olivem1000® MB as my self-emulsifier?
The manufacturer does recommend using a 1-2% thickener, such as Glyceryl Stearate SE, but you don’t have to do this. Depending on the other ingredients and the amount of Olivem1000® MB, you can achieve and very thick product without adding a thickener.
Another great alternative to use alongside Olivem1000® MB is the blend of Candelilla/Jojoba/Rice Bran Polyglyceryl-3 Esters (CRJ-3 Emulsifier). Using CRJ-3 Emulsifier as your thickener will decrease the stringiness of Olivem1000® MB, and create a more stable, thicker emulsion. Adding in CRJ-3 Emulsifier will give the finished product a more hydrating product, with a skin-feel that is silkier and softer.
You will need to high sheer mix until the emulsion is formed, then switch to slower mixing while cooling. Olivem1000® MB products can thicken quickly and become very thick, so always start on the lower range when testing and increase to create the viscosity you like.
How do I avoid the “soapiness” of Olivem1000® MB?
Olivem1000® MB is a fantastic ingredient, easy to use, upcycled, and creates fabulous, thick emulsions. As with any ingredient, there is a learning curve to creating the end feel you would like. One of the comments about Olivem1000® MB is the stringy, soapiness of the finished product. This generally happens when only Olivem1000® MB is used, or when not enough slip-enhancing ingredients are used. You want to balance the emulsifier with these great skin-feel ingredients to create a finished texture that is thick and hydrating.
Suggested slip ingredients are:
Cetyl Alcohol (used as an emulsifier and thickener)
Cetyl Esters (used to create better texture and increased emollience)
Stearyl Palmitate (better skin feel, reduces stickiness)
What should my oil concentration be use to use Olivem1000® MB in a cream/lotion?
Olivem1000® MB will emulsify up to 20-25% oils. This means the oil portion of your formula has to be 25% or lower. Balance out the rest of your ingredients with more slip agents as listed above, or other fatty alcohols to increase the hydration and decrease the soapiness.
Simply adding in 2% each of Cetearyl Alcohol and Stearic Acid will give the product great body, decreasing the soapiness, and increasing those fatty acids.
What is the issue with Glycerin and Olivem1000® MB?
Glycerin can be a problematic ingredient with Olivem1000® MB and will increase that soapiness in the finished cream. It is recommended to stay at 3-5% max of glycerin in your formula if you wish to use glycerin. A better alternative would be 1,3 Propanediol as it will not create the soapiness.
What is the pH of Olivem1000® MB?
5-7, which is ideal for skincare formulas! This aligns with the skin’s natural pH, making it ideal for sensitive skin products.
Can I use Olivem1000® MB in soap making?
Olivem1000® MB is a great emulsifier to use when making liquid soaps. It is not ideal for use in bar soaps. Incorporating Olivem1000® MB as your emulsifier in liquid soaps will create a creamy texture and will help stabilize the final product. Suggested usage in liquid soap is 2-5%
