Our natural, plant-based emulsifying wax is used to create lotions, creams, body butter, and other oil and water-emulsified formulas for skin and hair. Incorporating emulsifying wax helps to create a smooth, stable texture. The amount of e-wax you will use depends on the desired firmness of your finished product.
You can use up to 25% of the formula. You will want to test your product to ensure the formula meets the consistency you are looking for, and any time you switch brands of emulsifying wax please re-test products to ensure they remain consistent.
Emulsifying wax NF is a blend of cetearyl alcohol (100% derived from food-grade RSPO Palm), and polysorbate 60 (100% sorbitan stearate ethoxylated from corn). This means that our wholesale emulsifying wax is all-natural and vegetable-based; no synthetics or animal by-products, are common in emulsifying wax.
How to Use Emulsifying Wax for Skin and Hair:
Lotions: lotions are generally considered less viscous than a cream or body butter, therefore you will use less e-wax.
- Usage: 3-6% of total formula
- Method:
- Melt emulsifying wax along with your other oils and kinds of butter; heat to around 122-140°F
- Heat water phase separately
- Cool both parts (water and oil) to around the same temperature, then blend
- Mix with a high-speed mixer or stick blender until creamy
- Add in your other fun ingredients such as clean fragrances, essential oils, active ingredients
- You will need to use a preservative as you are blending oil and water together. We have several options, all with specific instructions on when to add and what temperature so be sure to follow those during the process
Body Butters: you will follow the same steps as for the lotion but increase your percentage of e-wax and decrease the amount of water. Make sure to use a preservative.
- Usage: 3-10%
Balms and Salves: you can utilize our natural, plant-based emulsifying wax in balms and salves that don’t have a water phase. This will create a firmness in your finished product unlike using just beeswax or other hard wax. If you are not incorporating water, you do not need to use a preservative.
- Usage: 5-10%
- How to use: melt with your oils and butter then blend well and allow to cool.
Hair Conditioners: utilizing emulsifying wax in your liquid conditioners gives the finished product a stable texture and maintains the emulsification.
- Usage: 5-8%
- How to use: same as with lotions and creams; melt with your oils/kinds of butter then blend well with the water phase. Again, make sure to use a preservative.
Hair Conditioner Bars: we love bar products! You can incorporate our vegetable-based emulsifying wax into your hair conditioner bars to help give hardness to the bar (lasts longer) and to make the finished product more stable.
- Usage: 5-10%
- Suggested Formula:
- E-wax: 5-10%
- IBT 50:25-30% (this is a conditioning emulsifier that creates a smooth, soft feel in the hair and is a better alternative to BTMS50)
- Cetyl Alcohol: 5-10% (increased slip and soft hair texture)
- Natural Oils: 10-15% (oils such as Organic Argan, Organic Amla, Organic Coconut Oil, Oregon grown Hazelnut Oil, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, etc)
- Butters: Nilotica shea, cocoa, cupuacu, kokum, horsetail, etc.
- dl-Pathenol:1-2%
- Hydrolyzed Rice Protein: you can incorporate this product in your finished bar if you use emulsifying wax. This will allow the water based Rice Protein to incorporate into the finished bar. 2-5%
- Essential oils or Clean Fragrance: 0.5-2%
- Preservative: you’ll need to incorporate a preservative if you use any water based ingredients, such as Hydrolyzed Rice Protein. You can use the Campo Plantservative Water Based Preservative or a blend of our Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate.
- Instructions:
- Melt the oil based ingredients and waxes together. Only heat until just melted then turn off.
- Cool to around 115°F
- Add in other ingredients (panthenol, rice protein, scents)
- Blend well
- Pour into your molds. Allow to cool either at room temperature or in the fridge to expedite the process
- Remove from your molds and allow to cure. Minimum cure time is 72 hours but the longer the better.
