Our base is made especially so you can customize it. We have worked closely with our chemists to create a sustainable shampoo base using the most natural yet effective ingredients we could source. This shampoo base is designed for you to customize by adding up to 8% additional ingredients (this includes fragrances, essential oils, or other natural oils). As is standard with natural based foaming agents, this shampoo base is a little thinner than one using standard surfactants, but it feels great in your hair and provides copius amounts of bubbles!
Our surfactants in this natural shampoo base are:
Sodium Cocoyl Alkyl Esters (coconut derived)
Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine (coconut derived)
Coco-Glucoside (coconut based)
Glyceryl Oleate (naturally derived from coconuts and sunflowers)
Cocoyl Monoethanolamine (coconut derived)
Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate (natural)

Ways to customize:
Shampoo base ingredients can also be used as a body wash base or hand soap base; it does not have to be just for hair. Add in deionized water to thin out; you can use this as a pourable bubble bath or even thin out enough to put into a foamer bottle for a foaming hand wash
Add in essential oils or fragrances; recommended level for any skincare product is 1-2% scent load
Add in moisturizing oils such as Grape Seed Oil, Hazelnut Oil, Organic Argan Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil…basically any oil we sell. You can go as little as 1% or all the way up to 8%.
Add in our hair specific ingredients like dl-Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Hydrolyzed Hemp Protein to create a nourishing, healing shampoo.
When you start customizing, always always always start with a small batch, take very good notes, and test your formulas. Each ingredient will change viscosity and color in their own way. For example, Vanilla Essential Oil will make the Shampoo Base a lovely tan color and won’t affect the viscosity, but Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil can turn it slightly yellow and thin it out! Always test to make sure the end product meets your expectations.
Excellent hair and scalp ingredients are natural oils such as organic argan oil, organic jojoba oil, Oregon hazelnut oil, wheat germ oil, meadowfoam seed oil, organic castor oil, and apricot oil.
Excellent essential oils that can be used in shampoos/shampoo bars/conditioners/conditioning bars are tea tree, lavender, rosemary, cajeput, ginger root, peppermint, eucalyptus, cedarwood. Any essential oil can be added, these are just some that have excellent hair/scalp benefits. Any of our natural fragrances can be used in the shampoo base.
When you are working with shampoo base ingredients, always test each additional component, including your scents, as some ingredients can change the viscosity of foaming bases. Some will make it thicker, some can thin it out. Start out small and make your test batch before making al large batch. Shay and Company is not responsible for your finished formula and there are no returns/refunds.

This shampoo base is fantastic. I was advised by the staff that I might need poly-20 or 80 to help bind but really I found it was unnecessary to produce a lovely product.
Through personal testing I learned that less is more with this product as the issue is breaking the gel base. If you’ve done this and your gel turns watery, the surfactant contained within the base is moderately salt reactive. Deep dive research taught me that up to 2% of your total weight in salt can return it to a semi gel state but as stated previously the surfactant is only moderately reactive to salt. This is a wash off product so adding salt to it will not hurt the end result in any way and is approved by the FDA.
To create our shampoo product I used only 20 drops of fragrance oil. I tested this with FO from multiple companies including Shay and Companies own FO and found that 20 drops give a good scent and does not break the gel. I also added up to 10 drops of argan and jojoba oil separately and together and, again, does not break the gel.
We use ethically sourced mica to color it and give it a bit of a pop for our clients. When adding start with a very small amount and work upwards to your desired color while continuing to monitor the gels consistency.
Overall we found this product incredibly easy to work with and so far all our clients have had very positive results from use. Leaves hair feeling clean and glossy without added weight. Paired with the liquid conditioner product from Shay and Company I found that my color treated hair felt healthier overall.
As with all products it will react differently based on the chemistry of the clients hair and I would recommend steering away from any claims on specific hair types until tested but that isn’t a flaw with the product as much as a reality of the different chemical make up of different hair types.
Works well on fine hair, thick hair and normal hair types from our feedback provided by both testers and clients of our company.
