Olive Oil Eco Silicone is a naturally derived alternative to silicones using 100% upcycled olive oil. You can use this olive oil silicone alternative in both hair and skincare formulas to help increase smoothness, moisture retention, and to create a protective layer on both hair and skin.
Olive Oil Eco Silicone is derived 100% from upcycled olive oil. The olives are pressed and used in olive oil. The leftover olive cake is then used to make Olive Oil Eco Silicone. The fatty acids are esterified using 2-ethylhexyl alcohol. The esterified fatty acids are then hydrogenated. This increases the saturation and makes the end product more stable.
Our Olive Oil Eco Silicone is ethylene oxide free.
Olive Oil Eco Silicone is oil soluble, making it an excellent ingredient to use in hair oils and liquid conditioners. You can simply add in this ingredient and mix, without having to use any additional emulsifiers, binders or preservatives.
How to use Olive Oil Eco Silicone:
Olive Oil Eco Silicone is an oil based ingredient, which means you will need to add it in the oil phase of your formulations.
100% Oil products- simply blend in, no need to add a preservative
Oil/Water Emulsions- add in during the oil phase but it is best added at 70-75°C/158-167°F as this ingredient is most stable under 75°C/167°F.
Adding to pre-made bases- If you want to add this ingredient to say our pre-made Shampoo base or Premium Conditioner base you can just blend it directly into the product. You do not need to heat the base nor heat the ingredient.
With the shampoo base, since it is a water base, you may see some cloudiness once added as this introducing an oil. To avoid this, you can blend the Olive Oil Eco Silicone with Polysorbate 80 first (1:1 ration), then add into the Shampoo base. We have also seen success when using a lightly gelled water and Guar blend, then added to the shampoo base to stabilize it. When this guar blend is added at 1% the shampoo stays very thick, even with the addition of oils and other fragrances/essential oils.
Shampoo and Conditioner Bars- this is an excellent ingredient to add to your shampoo and conditioner bars. This will help increase smoothness and combability when using bar products. This is often a difficult hurdle when making conditioner bars as they don’t have the same conditioning effects as a liquid conditioner, so adding Olive Oil Eco Silicone to the bars will help improve hair feel. Add at 0.5-3%.
Facial Care Products- this is not just an ingredient for hair care lines. Silicones are extremely popular in facial care products, especially eye gels and facial moisturizers. Using Olive Oil Eco Silicone will deliver the same skincare benefits as a silicone, without the chemical nature. Olive Oil Eco Silicone has great skin feel and increases the glide for topical products, without feeling heavy or greasy.
You can add at 0.5-10%, depending on the end goal of the formulation. If you’re using an existing base such as our Aloe Gel Base (to make a serum) or Lotion Base, you can just blend this directly in- no heating necessary.
What makes Olive Oil Eco Silicone such a great product?
So many things, but the target key points are this is a natural silicone alternative, it is an upcycled ingredient, and it has excellent hair and skin feel.
Here are some of the documented results of using Olive Oil Eco Silicone versus synthetic dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane:
The results of the wet combing tests indicated significant improvement in wet combing ease with the use of a conditioner containing 2% Olive Oil Eco Silicone compared to the placebo conditioner. The conditioner with 2% Olive Oil Eco Silicone showed a 47.42% reduction (* p<0.05 versus placebo and ** p<0.01 versus baseline), while the conditioner with 2% cyclopentasiloxane showed a 50.63% reduction (* p <0.05 versus placebo and ***p<0.001 versus baseline). Although cyclopentasiloxane provided the greatest improvement in wet combing ease by offering slip to the hair, making it easier to detangle and comb, Olive Oil Eco Silicone demonstrated comparable benefit after five applications. This indicates that Olive Oil Eco Silicone is an effective ingredient alternative to cyclopentasiloxane for improving wet combing in hair.
Luster and Shine- The ability of Olive Oil Eco Silicone to enhance shine and luster was evaluated on hair damaged by UV rays. Virgin Indian hair tresses were clarified using 10% SLES solution to remove impurities. The clarified hair tresses were then air dried and placed in the Q-Sun UV irradiation chamber for 96 hours to induce damage. Initial readings of hair shine and luster were taken before further treatment. Readings were measured using the Bossa Nova Samba Hair System 6. Next, the hair tresses were washed with a commercial protein-free shampoo and a commercial protein-free shampoo containing 1% Olive Oil Eco Silicone per their respective groups. The tresses were then washed with 0.2 grams of placebo shampoo per gram of hair for 60 seconds and rinsed thoroughly. Each swatch was treated through five wash cycles and swatches were allowed to air dry in ambient conditions in between. Subsequently, shine and luster measurements and images were taken.
The study demonstrated a significant improvement in hair shine and luster with the use of the shampoo containing 1% Olive Oil Eco Silicone compared to the placebo shampoo through both instrumental analyses and visual assessment.
The placebo shampoo improved shine, which is defined as the first reflection of light on the hair surface, by 12.08% (****p<0.0001 versus initial), while the Olive Oil Eco Silicone shampoo showed an 18.03% improvement (**p<0.01 versus placebo and ****p<0.0001 versus initial).
