Why is RSPO certification important?
Palm fruit oil has come under a lot of scrutiny over the last few years. Deforestation issues and destroying of animal habitat has been brought to light and it is our job as consumers to maintain the highest integrity in the products we sell and use. It is our privilege to provide to you a certified organic and certified RSPO palm oil. The specific harvesting company we work with for our palm has a documented Environmental Policy and a Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability contract, ensuring the highest quality sources for all their ingredients, including our palm oil.
Shay and Company is a certified RSPO palm reseller. The RSPO foundation ensures the palm oil used in these palm kernel flakes is sustainably sourced. RSPO Foundation sets global standards for sustainable palm harvesting, socially responsible farming practices and responsible labor practices. You should always select only RSPO palm products for your formulations.
Palm Kernel Flakes– these are white flakes that are solid and have a melt point of 112° or higher. Palm kernel flakes can be used in skincare, soap making and food applications. Using palm kernel flakes in your soap bars will make a much harder bar so be sure to test your formula if you are switching from palm oil.
Palm kernel flakes are all the hydrating benefits of palm oil but in a much more temperature stable form and are very easy to measure and store since they are flake form. Use 15-30% in your soap formulas.
Incorporating RSPO palm flakes into your soap bars will help increase lather while also leaving the skin feeling soft. This is due to the mild conditioning properties of palm flakes. It balances the soap bar, helping to keep it from being drying on the skin. This softening effect, combined with rich, cream lather, makes RSPO palm kernel flakes an excellent choice for soap making.
These are ideal for use in candles, soap bars, lotions, heavy creams, and liquid soaps. You can replace your palm oil with palm kernel flakes as they are easy to handle.
RSPO Palm Kernel Flakes are a great way to help increase the hot throw of your soy based candles. We do sell C1 Palm and Soy Candle blend, if you would prefer a pre-blended version, but you can just add in RSPO Palm Kernel Flakes into your 100% soy or soy-blended base to increase hardness and improve hot throw. Start at 10% and see how great these make your candles!
Palm oil is an excellent emollient and blending oil for cosmetics and personal care products and is an ideal oil for use in cooking and baking. Palm oil can be used in soaps and lotions alike and will impart a smooth skin feel and excellent hydration on the skin.
How to use Palm Kernel Flakes in Shampoo Bars
Shampoo bars are such an incredible product right now, taking the hair care world by storm! The ability to reduce packaging while still allowing for a superior product is what it is all about.
Using palm kernel flakes into your shampoo bars helps to create good, thick lather, excellent feel on the hair and skin, non-drying, and boosts lather. You can use 10-20% of palm kernel flakes in your shampoo bar formulas.
Incorporate it into the oil phase of your bar process. Melt the flakes along with the other oils and butters, then cool to blend with surfactants and lye, if you are using lye.
We offer three other types of palm oil products:
Organic RSPO Palm Fruit Oil– this is the traditional palm oil used in soaps and skincare. This palm oil is 100% RSPO certified. This palm oil will need to be stirred as you are melting/using it. RSPO Organic palm oil has a melt point of 76°F, is white in color when solid, clear when melted, no odor.
RSPO Palm Fruit Oil, Conventional– this has the same product characteristic and uses as the organic palm oil, it is just not certified organic.
RSPO Palm Shortening– this is a hydrogenated palm oil, designed to have a higher melt point. This is a no-stir palm. You can use palm shortening in soaps, skincare and food applications. This product is much firmer and has a melt point of 102-109°F. Palm shortening is white in color when solid, clear when melted. Palm shortening has little to no smell. Using palm shortening in your soap bars will created a harder bar.
If you are looking for a palm alternative, we do carry Organic Babassu Oil.
