What are the suggested levels of usage?
Below 10%; soluble in the water phase of your formula
Sodium Carbonate is also referred to as Soda Ash, Soda Crystals, Washing Soda and Sodium Dicarbonate. It is used in the production of soap bars and detergents. Our Sodium Carbonate is made in the USA and is a Dense grade.
Sodium Carbonate is used in soap and foaming cleansers to help enhance the efficacy of the cleansers and to help control the pH balance.
When used in Laundry Detergent formulas, Sodium Carbonate works as a stain remover and boosts cleansing effectiveness of your detergent. Sodium Carbonate does not foam on its own, but when mixed with surfactants, it does increase the foamability and cleansing action. You can also use Sodium Carbonate in a powder laundry detergent booster, blending Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate with a few drops of essential oil.
Sodium Carbonate is also used in dying of fabrics, balancing pH in swimming pools, glass making and brick making.
Is soda ash dense natural?
Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is produced either naturally or synthetically, both of which produce chemically identical soda ash. Shay and Company only sells natural soda ash which has a much lower carbon and water footprint than synthetic product.
The natural process involves extracting and then processing trona ore. Trona is a naturally occurring mineral that resulted from the evaporation of lakes tens of millions of years ago.
The soda ash dense sold at Shay and Company is natural soda ash, which requires much less energy, capital and raw materials than synthetic soda ash production, and is a significantly less-costly process.
Is washing soda the same as soda ash?
Yes, washing soda is another name for soda ash. So is sodium carbonate powder.
How is soda ash dense made?
Wholesale Soda ash dense is made using a natural mineral called Trona. The trona material is mined then dissolved in water, creating a brine. This brine is then filtered to create the correct concentration of mineral. That mineral is then stripped and evaporated. The residual crystals are then washed with a lye solution to remove the unwanted, naturally occurring bicarbonate. This leftover solution is concentrated in a monohydrate crystallizer, creating the sodium carbonate crystals. The crystals are separated out from any remaining slurry and then are dried, creating sodium carbonate.
Where is trona naturally found?
Trona, the mineral used to make sodium carbonate (soda ash) is only found in three places in the world: Wyoming, Turkey and China. The soda ash light sold at Shay and Company is made from trona mined in Wyoming or Turkey, only.
Is soda ash sustainable?
Yes, the trona is mined in an environmentally sustainable method. The original manufacturer of the soda ash has a green product certification specifically because of the sustainable mining method.
Are there residual solvents in Soda Ash Dense?
The manufacturing of sodium carbonate powder dense utilizes a proprietary processing aid that contains solvents. The material aids in removing trace impurities and dispersing shale oils that are associated with the trona ore body and are added to the process at very low levels (< 3 ppm). The downstream manufacturing, crystallization, and calcining processes further reduces any remaining impurities or solvents.
Soda ash dense has gone under two analytical studies to confirm the removal of the processing aids. An analysis for residual processing aids was conducted at an external analytical lab with reported results below levels of detection. An internal analytical study on material co-produced on the same production line, conducted in accordance with USP Standards, resulted in no residual solvents measured above the assay detection limits.
Why is soda ash dense only 99% pure? What else is in the soda ash dense?
All grades (Dense, Light) Soda Ash are single ingredient soda ash for cleansing products with a purity specification of 99.2% (typical purity ≥ 99.8%) and contains trace naturally occurring mineral content.
What is the difference between soda ash light and soda ash dense?
Soda ash light is made of finer particles and has lower bulk density. It is a finer product than soda ash dense.
Soda ash dense is a heavier product with larger sized granules. It still isn’t “large” but it is larger than soda ash lite.
Why would I choose soda ash light versus soda ash dense?
Both products are 100% sodium carbonate, they are just different sized granules. Here is some information about the functionality of each and why you would chose one over the other. Keep in mind that formulators will often combine the two in a product, creating a dynamic that is better overall than just using one size over the other.
Dissolves Faster – Easier to blend with other powder ingredients – More ideal for small batch manufacturing and testing – Most familiar product for soap makers
Less dust – less caking when storing – easier to use with large mixing equipment due to less water absorption in the air
Is soda ash biodegradable?
Soda Ash is a mineral salt. It doesn’t biodegrade but it does naturally dissipate into water and dissolves completely, leaving no residual pollutant material.
Can soda ash lite be used in laundry detergent?
Yes, soda ash is one of the most common ingredients used in natural laundry detergents.
Why use soda ash dense in natural laundry detergents?
Soda ash works to balance the pH and soften the water in your home laundry system. This allows the clothes to get cleaner than with harsher or harder water. Soda ash also helps to remove stains and boost the surfactants cleansing power.
Does Soda Ash remove odors?
Yes, soda ash is very alkaline and helps neutralize bad odors.
Does soda ash disinfect?
No, soda ash helps to increase cleaning power of your laundry detergent or home cleansers, but it does not disinfect.
Can I use soda ash in household cleansers?
Yes! Use soda ash in kitchen cleaners, degreasers and powdered detergents.
Does soda ash dissolve in water?
Yes, soda ash completely dissolves in water.
Does soda ash foam or bubble?
No, soda ash is not a surfactant. The bubble, or foaming, portion of your formula would need to come from SCI Powder, SLSA powders, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside.
Is soda ash (calcium carbonate) the same as baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)?
No, soda ash has a different chemical structure and different performance than sodium bicarbonate. Soda ash is more alkaline and much stronger.
Sodium Carbonate is a combination of sodium and acid, whereas sodium bicarbonate is a blend of sodium, acid, and hydrogen.
Does soda ash expire?
Technically we have to list an expiration date on the C of A but soda ash can long outlast the five years.
Can soda ash be used in bath products?
No, soda ash should not be used in products designed to be used in baths. This product is much stronger than what should be used in skincare products and should only be used in laundry and household cleaning products. You would use Sodium Bicarbonate in any skincare or bath product.
Is Soda Ash Dense Prop 65 Compliant?
Sodium Carbonate is free of any California Prop 65 ingredients.
