When making steam distilled essential oils, the heavy oils fall to the bottom and the steam that rises to the top is called a hydrolat (or hydrosol or plant water). The hydrosols that we carry are these 100% pure steam by-product of the plant- no water added, no preservatives needed as these are 100% steam, no essential oil added.
Why Tulsi Hydrosol?
Tulsi hydrolat/hydrosol is an excellent way to get the benefits of holy basil without having the strong smell of the essential oil. Tulis is also known as Holy Basil, or the Queen of Herbs. We carry both Holy Basil essential oil and Organic Tulsi (Holy Basil) hydrolat simply because holy basil is incredibly good for the skin and mental health.
Plants have so much power and utilizing them in your skincare and self-care product line enhances your finished product. Tusli (Holy Basil) has such an uplifting power that just a small spritz of this hydrolat on your face totally calms you immediately. This same calming effect is transferred to the skin and scalp when used in skincare and hair care products.
Organic Tulsi Hydrolat smells so good you can sell it just as it is! Use as a pillow spray, face mist, body hydrator, or as the water base for any one of your many skincare formulas!
Tulsi is an excellent addition to acneic skincare lines. It is an adaptogenic and has excellent anti-bacterial and astringent properties. You can blend Organic Tulsi Hydrosol with Organic Witch Hazel to create a skin and scalp tonic. Add in a little Holy Basil Essential Oil, Lactic Acid, and AHA Fruit Enzyme Blend to balance sebum production and combat fine lines and wrinkles.
If you’re targeting aging skin, use Organic Tulsi Hydrosol as your base, add in a small amount of Organic Witch Hazel to help reduce pore size, use 0.5-1% Tripeptide 29 Collagen Pre-Peptide, with 10% Keifer Water to gently exfoliate and boost natural collagen production.
You can mix any of our organic botanical hydrosols with essential oils to make a room spray, also. There are two ways:
- Just use the hydrosol and some essential oils and advise your customers that they will need to shake it each time before use as the essential oils will separate out OR
- Blend your essential oils with Polysorbate 80 (1 to 1 ratio), then add into your organic plant hydrosols. The polysorbate 80 works as an emulsifier to keep the oils suspended and it is 100% plant based!
Due to the soft smell profile of hydrolats/hydrosols you can use just about any of these with other essential oils.
You can use organic hydrosols directly on the skin. These are not as strong as essential oils, so no dilution is needed.
If you use any of our organic hydrosols on their own, you do not have to add any preservative to them. If you add water (please use distilled water) to the base, you will have to add a preservative. You can use a blend of Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate; you can use Leucidal Liquid Complete; you can use Campo Plantservative Water Soluble. Anytime you add water to a product you will need to do a preservative.
Tulsi (Holy Basil) blends well with Clary Sage, Bergamot, Lime, Organic Lavender, Lavandin, Egyptian Geranium, Frankincense, Laurel Leaf, Marjoram, Niaouli, Sweet Orange 10x, Neroli.
Hydrolats/hydrosols do smell like the essential oil they are derived from, but they are not nearly as strong as an essential oil. This makes them ideal to use as a gentle spray all on their own, or you can blend them into your products to impart the plant benefits without overwhelming your finished product aroma.
Organic hydrolats/hydrosols are excellent to use as tonics, face sprays, body sprays, perfume bases, and as carriers for skincare products in place of using just water. When you use a hydrolat/hydrosol in place of the water in your formula, you calculate that as part of the organic percentage, and you get to list the plant benefits.
They will impart a vary faint smell to your products, but nothing like adding the essential oil. These cannot be used in place of essential oils or fragrances with the expectation that your products will smell the same.
Having said all that, hydrolats/hydrosols are the BEST way to get plant bio-actives into your products without having the strong smells of the essential oils.
Our organic Tulsi (Holy Basil) Hydrolat/Hydrosol is now grown right here in Oregon! We have partnered with an exceptional farm in Philomath, Oregon. We carry Lavender, Hemp, Cucumber and Tulsi Organic hydrosols all grown on this same farm.
About the farm:
This farm is the brainchild of two long-time Oregonians. With the onset of the Hemp Pilot program in Oregon, Josh started J & J Organics with veggie farmer extraordinaire John Eveland, growing USDA certified organic hemp right in the fertile soils beside the Mary’s River in Philomath. As production grew it became apparent that there was a major lack of infrastructure to process organically grown hemp into certified organic full spectrum hemp oil and hemp products. This gave birth to one of the first fully USDA certified hemp processing facilities on the west coast. They have since grown into a central place in the organic hemp community of Oregon, using home-grown expertise to create custom extracts and build private label product lines. This farm has also championed third-party certifications to help with transparency and integrity, including becoming one of the first Demeter-certified Biodynamic hemp processing facilities in the United States.
