Organic Irish Moss is so full of minerals and polysaccharides, you’ll love what this does to your customers’ skin. Organic Irish Moss can be used as a natural thickener (along with organic marshmallow root); it helps to increase hydration; it is extremely calming to irritated hair and skin; full of natural polysaccharides, helping to product skin’s barrier function; mineral rich with 92 of the 102 minerals that the human body needs.
Organic Irish Moss is often used as a natural thickener in skincare and hair care formulas. It works similar to the way Organic Marshmallow Root does. When applied to the skin, this helps protect the natural skin barrier, preventing water loss and drying, and helping to increase moisture retention. Organic Irish Moss and Organic Marshmallow Root can be used together as a thickeners and will impart the skin benefits of each product. You do not, however, have to use them together.
How to use Organic Irish Moss as a thickener?
- Our Organic Irish Moss has already been cleaned and heat treated to reduce microbial reaction. You do not need to rinse or soak this product prior to use.
- Simmer at low heat deionized or distilled water
- Add in Organic Irish Moss Powder; ratio should be 1-part Irish moss to 40 parts water
- Blend well
The more Organic Irish Moss you use, the thicker the end product will be.
To use this base in your formulas, you will have to add a preservative to the finished product. Ideal preservatives would be either a 50/50 blend of Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate, or  Campo Plantservative Water Soluble version.
Organic Irish Moss has naturally high mucilage content, which helps create a protective barrier on the skin, helping to increase moisture retention and improving skin softness. This makes Organic Irish Sea Moss and excellent ingredient to use in facial serums. You can use this in conjunction with other hydrating ingredients such as Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hyaluronate 7 Solution, Olive Oil Squalane, Olive Oil Eco Silicone, and Organic Broccoli Seed Oil. This blend would create an amazing hydrating, soothing and calming facial serum. Make sure to always use a preservative when using Organic Irish Moss as your thickening agent. If you want the finished product to be thicker than what you can get with just Organic Irish Moss, you can add Guar Hydroxyproyltrimonium Chloride to increase the viscosity.
You can use organic irish sea moss power when making soap to help create a smooth, creamy lather and as a natural exfoliant. You can add the irish moss powder directly to the soap as a dry exfoliant. You’ll add this after you have done the lye water/oil blend so your end viscosity will not thicken.
You can also use a thickened Organic Irish Sea Moss water as part of your lye water solution. You’ll create the thickened irish sea moss water and deduct that from your total lye water content. Incorporating it this way will create a creamier lather in your finished bar.
Organic Irish Moss is also an excellent ingredient for hair care products. The same minerals that are beneficial to the skin will also help hair follicles. You can use the thickened gel as the base for a hair mask or scalp treatment, or you can add the thickened gel base to your liquid shampoos and conditioners.
When used in hair care applications, Organic Irish Sea moss helps to calm dry, irritated and itchy scalps. It also helps to increase conditioning properties, increasing shine and reducing fizz.
