Fractioned liquid coconut oil is also known as MCT oil. This is a liquid version of coconut oil and is very commonly used for natural-based skincare, lotions, creams, butter, soaps, CBD and THC tinctures, extracts, and edibles. Our kosher MCT oil is colorless and odorless. There are no physical differences between any of our three versions of MCT, it all just depends on whether you want organic and if you care that one is pure coconut or one is a palm/coconut blend.
As a note, kosher MCT/fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut Oil. This product has been modified to stay a liquid. On your ingredient decks, you cannot list this as coconut oil (Cocos Nucifera). You have to list it as caprylic/capric triglyceride (organic fractionated coconut oil). If you are making soap and your formula calls for coconut oil, you cannot use kosher MCT. Your soap bars will not process correctly.
We here at Shay have three different types of fractionated coconut/MCT for you. The difference between our three MCTs is simply the origin of the ingredients used to make it. There is no difference in color or taste. Next to each other, you would never be able to tell the difference.
97226- Conventional MCT/Fractionated Coconut Oil that is a Palm and Coconut blend
Fatty Acid Composition of 97226:
Caprylic Acid- 50-65%
Capric Acid- 30-45%
Lauric Acid- 0-1.5%
97228- 100% Coconut-Derived MCT Fractionated Coconut Oil
Fatty Acid Composition of 97228:
Caprylic Acid- 50-80%
Capric Acid- 30-50%
97227- Organic 100% Coconut Sourced Fractionated Coconut Oil
Fatty Acid Composition of 97227:
Caprylic Acid- 50-80%
Capric Acid- 30-45%
The difference is that the conventional Fractionated Coconut/MCT 97226 can be sourced from either coconut or palm and is traditionally a blend of the two; it is also not certified organic. The 100% coconut sourced fractionated coconut oils are 100% coconut sourced, so no palm at all, and one is certified organic. If you are looking to create products that do not contain palm, then either of the 100% coconut-sourced fractionated Coconut Oils is what you need.

FAQโs
Is organic fractionated coconut oil the same as mct?
Yes, MCT and Fractionated Coconut Oil are interchangeable names for the same product.
What is fractionated coconut oil?
Fractionated Coconut Oil is coconut oil with the medium-chain triglycerides (MCTโs) separated out, creating a product that will stay liquid at all temperatures. Specific MCTโs are C8 and C10.
Is there such as a thing as C8 MCT Oil?
Yes, there is a fractionated coconut oil where just the C8 has been pulled. This is traditionally used in supplements and the food industry; there is no specific need for just C8 MCT in cosmetic applications.
What is the INCI for organic fractionated coconut oil?
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
Why is palm derived fractionated coconut oil still called fractionated coconut oil?
Technically speaking, palm derived MCT oil is not โfractionated coconut oilโ as it is not derived from coconut BUT the INCI is the same, and the finished product is identical in function, feel and smell. In the cosmetic industry even palm derived MCT oil is referred to as Fractionated Coconut Oil because they are interchangeable in their formulation function.
What color is organic fractionated coconut oil?
Organic MCT oil is clear to very light yellow.
Does organic fractionated coconut oil smell like coconut?
No, organic fractionated coconut oil has no smell traditionally.
How is organic fractionated coconut oil made?
Organic MCT is made by separating out the caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) triglycerides from traditional coconut oil. This creates a temperature stable and shelf stable liquid oil rich in these specific fatty acids. This process is done by fractionation (heat, cooling then steaming) the raw coconut oil to separate out the fatty acids.
These specific medium chain triglycerides are then combined with a glycerol through esterification.
Finally, the oil is filtered and deodorized to create a clear, unflavored, aroma free oil.
Why is some fractionated coconut oil from coconut and some from palm and coconut?
Palm oil and coconut oil appear similar in color and texture but they contain different amounts of fatty acids. Palm oil contains very high levels of C12 (lauric acid), then lower amounts of C8 (caprylic) and C10 (capric). Coconut oil is high in C8 and C10, with low to no levels of C12.
What is the benefit of 100% coconut mct in cosmetic products?
There are a couple of reasons why customers select 100% coconut derived MCT for their products.
- Palm free- this is true for the organic fractionated coconut oil and the 100% coconut derived fractionated coconut oil
- Specific fatty acid profile of C8 and C10. These have different absorption properties from C12 Lauric Acid, which is more prominent in the palm/coconut MCT oil.
- 100% coconut derived MCT oil has faster absorption properties from the palm/coconut MCT
- 100% coconut derived MCT oil is also more shelf stable than the palm/coconut MCT
Why is it called fractionated coconut oil?
The C8 and C10 are separated out through fractionation, which is why it is called fractionated coconut oil.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil natural?
Yes, organic MCT is 100% natural.
Is this organic fractionated coconut oil certified organic?
Yes, Shay and Company Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil is 100% certified organic.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil vegan?
Yes, organic MCT oil is vegan.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil good for skin?
Yes, people like using organic fractionated coconut oil in skincare and hair care applications because it is a lightweight oil with good absorption. It has similar skin properties as traditional coconut oil, but without the heavy feel.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil non-comedogenic?
Organic fractionated coconut oil on the lower-end of the comedogenic scale.
Can organic fractionated coconut oil clog pores?
Organic fractionated coconut oil performs differently on the skin than traditional coconut, so if you have had pore issues with traditional coconut, MCT oil is a great alternative. It is especially good in products like facial cleansing oils and body oils. The cleansing factor of the C8 and C10 medium chain triglycerides is excellent and the finished product leaves the skin feeling clean and soft.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil used in acne focused skincare lines?
Yes, people like organic fractionated coconut oil in acne skincare because of the light feel and the quick absorption. Plus Caprylic and Capric fatty acids are excellent at repairing the skin.
What is the skin and hair benefit of C8 Caprylic acid?
Fatty acids are found in many natural oils, not just in fractionated coconut oil. Each fatty acid has its own skin and hair benefit. Caprylic Acid (C8) is specifically:
- Antimicrobial- this makes it ideal for anti-acne skincare
- Creates protective skin barrier preventing trans epidermal water loss (TEWL)
- Excellent shelf life
- High moisturization properties
What is the skin and hair benefit of C10 Capric acid?
Capric acid performs similarly to Caprylic, the difference is the carbons. C8 has 8 carbons and C10 has 10 carbons. This has a bigger indication when taken internally; topically both fatty acids perform similarly and together create an emollient that is also non-greasy.
Does organic fractionated coconut oil absorb quickly?
Yes. This product creates a great skin barrier, protecting the skin and preventing water loss, while not sitting on top of the skin.
Can fractionated coconut oil be used around the eyes?
Yes, just like any natural oil, though, you want to test your final product. MCT is great for eye area treatments due to it being lightweight and great absorption.
Can organic fractionated coconut oil be helpful with dry skin?
Yes, the triglycerides and fatty acids all help retain moisture on dry skin. Use it in lotions, body oils, creams, cuticle treatments, facial oils serums, hair oils, leave-in conditioners; anything where you want great absorption and consistent hydration.
Does organic fractionated coconut oil reduce frizz in hair?
Yes! Organic fractionated coconut oil is an excellent ingredient to use in hair care products. Combine it with ingredients such as Olive Oil Eco Silicone, Organic Broccoli Seed Oil, Olive Oil Squalane, Organic Black Seed Oil and Organic Argan Oil to create the base for a leave-in hair oil and a leave in hair conditioner. You could add that oil blend to our Premium Conditioner Base and have a fabulous leave-in conditioning treatment.

This all really depends on the product you are making and the desired end feel, but here are some guidelines:
Lotions, Creams, Hair Conditioners (emulsified products)- 1-10%
This is still an oil so you have to make sure to balance out the amount of oil to the amount of thickeners so you create the desired end consistency.
Foaming Cleanser such as body wash, bubble bath, foaming shower gel, shampoos, foaming facial cleansers- 1-5%
Oil Based Products such as beard oils, facial oils, cuticle oils, hair oils- 10-70%
Organic MCT works as an ideal carrier oil when blending with other active oils.
Can organic fractionated coconut oil be used at 100% of my formula?
Yes, you can. It can be used as a body oil or massage oil as the stand-alone ingredient but there are so many other great oils out there that you could combine with MCT to get the same lightweight feel and all the other plant benefits. If you love it as it is, though, you can use it as 100% of the formula.
Can organic fractionated coconut oil be heated?
Yes, it will withstand heat just like any other oil.
Can I make lotion or creams (emulsified products) using organic fractionated coconut oil as the oil part of my formula?
Yes! Organic fractionated coconut oil can be used as the oil part of any of your emulsified formulas.

Can I use organic fractionated coconut oil for massage?
Yes, you can use organic fractionated coconut oil as a massage oil or as part of a massage oil blend.
Can I use organic fractionated coconut oil in soap making?
Historically I would have said no, that you should use Coconut 76 for soap making but one of our makers just told me they exclusively use fractionated coconut oil instead of Coconut 76 so my answer has changed. Yes, you can use organic fractionated coconut oil in cold and hot process soap. Now, having said that, you will need to alter your formula. Organic fractionated coconut oil is fatty acids (the part that works in soap) and glycerol so it will only function as a liquid and will not contribute to the hardness of your bar. That means that you will have to adjust your formula to compensate for the lack of hard butters.
Can I add organic fractionated coconut oil to melt and pour soap?
Yes, you can definitely add organic fractionated coconut oil to melt and pour soap. Ideal amounts are 1-5% max as it is a liquid and youโll have to ensure the bar will harden back up. It can help create a softer skin-fell in the finished bar.
Can I make bath oils using organic fractionated coconut oil?
Yep! Organic fractionated coconut oil makes an ideal carrier for bath oils as it is lightweight and very hydrating. Try blending with Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Oregon Hazelnut Oil and Sweet Almond Oil, then add in whatever fragrances or essential oils youโd like and get to that bath!
What is the shelf life for organic fractionated coconut oil?
Our oils all have a 3-year shelf life. Having said that, coconut oil and fractionated coconut oils have a very long shelf life. 3+ years if stored correctly.
Does organic fractionated coconut oil go rancid?
Not really, unless it is getting overly heated then cooled on a consistent basis. Otherwise, organic fractionated coconut oil should be stable for a very long time.
Do I need to refrigerate organic fractionated coconut oil?
No, the manufacturing process of fractionated coconut oils makes it very stable and refrigeration is never needed.
How should I store organic fractionated coconut oil?
You can just store it in the container you purchase it in. Make sure the lid is tight; store it in a fairly temperature consistent environment (no major heat and no freezing); and keep it out of direct constant sunlight.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil biodegradable?
Yes, it is readily biodegradable.
If organic fractionated coconut oil environmentally friendly?
Yes, coconut is a renewable resource so organic fractionated coconut oil is environmentally friendly.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil palm free?
Yes, organic fractionated coconut oil and our 100% Coconut Derived MCT Fractionated Coconut is palm free. The conventional MCT Oil version is a palm and coconut blend so that one SKU is not palm free. That one is, however, RSPO palm.
Is organic fractionated coconut oil COSMOS approved?
Yes, organic MCT is COSMOS-compliant.
Why should I use organic fractionated coconut oil over conventional Coconut 76?
These are both derived from coconut but they are very different end products. Organic Fractionated coconut oil is a liquid, all the time, and specifically uses the C8 and C10 medium-chain triglycerides. It is also combined with glycerol to create the liquid. This makes organic fractionated oil more ideal for formulas where you need it to be:
- Liquid no matter the temperature
- Little to no aroma
- No color
- Lightweight skin feel
- Quick absorption
- Excellent shelf life
