Organic Marshmallow Root can be used for a variety of benefits in both skincare and soap making. Organic Marshmallow Root has a naturally high level of mucilage, a polysaccharide known for retaining moisture on the skin and functioning as a natural thickener.
Organic marshmallow root has traditionally been used in topicals to help with wound healing and soothing irritated skin. The natural polysaccharides help to lock in moisture, calming and hydrating damaged skin. It helps to create a gentle, protective film on the skin, supporting the natural barrier protection, maintaining moisture on the skin and protecting against environmental damage.
Marshmallow root’s soothing and calming effects make it an excellent choice for after sun, or after burn treatments. You can extract the organic marshmallow root into water, creating a gelatinous texture, then use this as a base for an after-sun skincare treatment. Adding other sun protective ingredients such as Astaxanthin, Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil, Organic Black Seed Oil, Organic Evening Primrose Oil and cold pressed Cucumber Seed Oil would create a fantastic after-sun treatment. You could even use one of our organic hydrosols as the water portion, boosting up the effectiveness of the finished product. You would need to include a preservative as you are incorporation oils and water. Our Campo Plantservative Water Base would be perfect.
You can grind up organic marshmallow root and incorporate it both in soaps and skincare as a natural exfoliant.
Organic Marshmallow Root also lends itself to be very beneficial in hair care formulas. You can use the water or hydrosol extracted root to create hair serums. The moisture retention properties and soothing benefits helps to repair damaged, dry hair.
It is also an excellent medium for skin and scalp conditions. Extract the marshmallow root into water, hydrosol, or glycerin to create your gel base. If you’re targeting hair re-growth, think about using our Organic Rosemary Hydrosol. Then blend with ingredients like Organic Black Seed Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil, AHA Fruit Enzyme Blend, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Colloidal Oatmeal Liquid Extract, and of course the Campo Plantservative Water Base.
To create a smoothing hair treatment, especially if you’re making Shampoo and Conditioner bars, extract the organic marshmallow root into one of our organic hydrosol, then add in Quaternized Lemon Shine, Organic Broccoli Seed Oil, Olive Oil Squalane, Sodium Hyaluronate 7 Solution and Organic Argan Oil. This would help to tame frizzy hair, increase moisture without being heavy, and promote healthier hair growth.
How to use Organic Marshmallow Root:
In Soaps- you will infuse into an oil or water. If you extract it into water, deduct this quantity from your lye water. Marshmallow root is best infused cold, so you will want to add to the lye water after the heat process has occurred. Using organic marshmallow root in soap bars creates a less drying, more hydrating soap bar.
In Skincare- traditionally this is used either by extracting into water, hydrosol, glycerin or aloe gel, then using that in your formula. This will create a thickened, gelatinous base. You can use this base is toners, serums, and facial lotions.
In Haircare- extract into glycerin, water or hydrosol to create your base, then add in hair specific ingredients to create either a smoothing oil, or a scalp stimulating product. You can also use it blended with our Premium Conditioner Base to create a hair mask.
