CTFA Name: Cocamidopropyl Betaine
INCI Name: Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Country of Origin: Korea
Packaging:Â Drums, BPA-free buckets, BPA-free jugs, amber glass bottles
Description:Â Amber viscous liquid; characteristic soapy aroma
Applications:Â Skincare, Soap Manufacturing
Benefits:
Better suited for mild, acidic formulations (e.g., baby care, facial cleansers, intimate washes)
Closer to skin’s natural pH (4.5–5.5), more gentle
Lower pH improves preservative efficacy and microbial resistance
May improve compatibility with acidic actives (e.g., AHAs, vitamin C)
More suitable for low-foam, sensitive skin formulas
Cocamidopropyl Betaine is an excellent high-foaming, mild surfactant for use in your foaming bath care products. Cocamidopropyl Betaine is excellent at increasing foamability in your shampoos, hand soaps, shower gels, pet shampoos, soap and more.
There are two types of CAPB (Cocoamidopropyl Betains) sold. One had a pH range of 4.5-5.5 (this one) and the other has pH range of 6.0-7.5. Both are used for the same general purpose and both are made of the same ingredients, but the individual pH of the raw material indicates which type of formula in which it should be used.
4.5-5.5 ph range is ideal for mild, acidic formulas
6.0-7.5 pH range is ideal for neutral to slightly alkaline formulas
6.0-7.5 pH product benefits:
Suitable for neutral to slightly alkaline formulations (e.g., standard shampoos, body washes)
May cause more irritation in sensitive skin due to higher pH
May require different or stronger preservatives; microbial growth risk is slightly higher
Compatible with other neutral surfactants
More stable in high-foam formulas
Cocamidopropyl betaine can be used in both solid and liquid soaps to help increase foamability and to thicken the base formula. Cocamidopropyl Betaine has strong anti-irritant properties so the feel of soaps made with Cocamidopropyl betaine is more mild on the skin. Cocamidopropyl betaine also is not affected by hard water, so soap bars and liquid soaps made using cocamidopropyl betaine are more effective in both soft and hard water environments.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine also contributes a creamier, softer lather to your soap products. This is because of the high concentration of fatty acids in this surfactant.
