Here at Shay and Company we have done our best to bring in a small mixture of different preservatives that you can use in your formulas. All products that contain water should have a preservative system or they will start to grow mold. We are providing these preservatives for you BUT you must do your own formulating and challenge testing for your finished products. Shay and Company holds no liability for the outcome of your products.
Campo Plantservatives should be incorporated at <40°C/104°F during the cooling phase of your formulation, after your emulsion has been formed
We have two versions of the very popular Plantservative Liquid preservatives for you. Both are broad-spectrum, all natural preservatives that do not have to be combined with another preservative.
Campo Plantservative Oil Soluble:
- Excellent for use in topical productions that are predominantly oil based (such as oil sugar scrubs); antimicrobial in function
- Water soluble with a pH of 3-8
- Flash Point >320°F
- Suggested Use Levels- 2.5-3.5%
- Applications- Moisturizing, Skin Conditioning, Antimicrobial
- ECOCERT/COSMOS Approved
- Whole Foods Compliant
Oil soluble composition:
Up to 65% Lonicera Caprifolium Extract
Up to 20% Lonicera Japonica Extract
Balance is jojoba oil
Campo Plantservative Water Soluble
- Excellent for broad spectrum preservative use in topical products; offers moisturizing and skin conditioning benefits, along with the broad spectrum protection
- Water Soluble with a pH of 9.0-12.0
- Flash Point >200°F
- Suggested Use Levels-0.8-6.0%
- Applications- Moisturizing, skin conditioning, broad spectrum antifungal and antimicrobial
- ECOCERT/COSMOS Approved
- Whole Foods Compliant
Water soluble composition:
Up to 25% Lonicera Caprifolium Extract
Up to 60% Lonicera Japonica Extract
Balance is water
Suggestions to assist with your formulation using Campo Plantservatives.
- Measure the temperature of the oils to get complete melting
- Heat the water to approximately the same temperature as the oil (preferably to 160 F = 70 C, the melting point of stearic acid). This should avoid causing the oil ingredients to solidify if “cold” water hits the waxes.
- You can add the Water Soluble version to your water phase at this point.
- After adding the water to the oil, let the cream mix for longer than 2 minutes before begin cooling down. We typically do 15 minutes. This allows time for the emulsion to form and stabilize. The more energy you put in the emulsion (temperature or mixer speed or mix time) the smaller the internal phase droplet size which will be a more elegant, more stable (and usually thicker) emulsion.
- You can add the oil soluble version to your base at this point.
- Similarly, let the cream mix longer than 2 – 5 minutes after adding the essential oils and preservative. This will help ensure that the cream is uniform and the preservative is well dispersed throughout the cream’s volume.
Tips for use:
- Keep the pH between 4-12. Ideal is 5-7 depending on finished product. You will adjust this after adding to final formula to stabilize the pH.
- Citric Acid– 50% solution
- Lactic Acid-80% solution
- Yeast and mold you will need soft acids but make sure to keep the pH below 5.2.
- Adding natural chelators such as Sodium EDTA will help substantially.
- The Plantservative Water Soluble version comes at pH of 11, so you must buffer the pH down with a tiny bit of citric acid /lactic acid to bring it down to below 8. This will prevent the system from shock and crashing.
- Water Based Formulas: You can incorporate the water soluble version at any point of the formula.
- Water and Oil Emulsion: Oil soluble version should be added in the cooling phase; may need to use an emulsifier in water phase before heating to stabilize viscosity
- Oil and Water emulsions: add to water phase before heating
Benefits of Campo Plantservative Preservatives (say that 10 times fast):
Broad spectrum antimicrobial activities; the water soluble version exhibits rapid microbial activity against gram-negative bacteria, as well as gram positive bacteria, yeasts and molds.
Suitable concentrations (0.5-2% for water soluble; >2.5% for oil soluble) show rapid bacterial activities, even against such species as Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, which is resistant to many synthetic preservatives.
Easy incorporation- being liquids both options disperse easily and blend well. The water soluble version is miscible with many organic solvents, surfactants and emulsifiers.
Good compatibility- both options are chemically inert, making it compatible with the majority types of ingredients. At correct concentrations, will maintain strong, extensive efficacy in presence of materials such as proteins, gums, anionic materials and will maintain antimicrobial activities in acidic, neutral, and mildly alkaline conditions.
Does not cause changes in color or aroma to final products.
Non-volatile- should be no loss of preservative activity even after prolonged exposure to air or in storage.
High stability- remains stable over wide percentage range of pH and temperature. No significant degradation when heated in pH range of 3-8.
Low toxicity- Comprehensive toxicological data has shown these preservatives to have low toxicity, being totally non-irritant to skin, mucous membranes, and well tolerated in eye preparations.
Fully biodegradable.
