Alpha Bisabolol is a monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol with natural anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agent that promotes healing and soothing. Alpha Bisabolol Natural is sourced from the Candeia tree and contains 100% (-)-α-bisabolol, the only biologically active isomer, while the synthetic version of the product contains only 50% (racemic mixture (±) α-bisabolol).
Alpha-Bisabolol can be used in a variety of hair care and skin care products such as emulsions, gels and serums. Its compatible over a wide pH range of 3-11. The suggested usage rate is 0.07 – 1%. It is stable at very high temperatures but should not be exposed to temperatures of 120C and above.
Alpha-Bisabolol is an excellent ingredient to include in any formulations specifically targeting a reduction in inflammation. Alpha-bisabolol natural is much stronger than a synthetic version, with at least 95% strength. Alpha-Bisabolol works to downregulate inflammatory cytokines. Alpha-Bisabolol has been proven to help reduce redness and swelling in eczema, acne, psoriasis and dermatitis.
Incorporate alpha-Bisabolol into formulations targeting aging and sun damage. The strong skin healing effects work to help combat oxidative stress, reducing signs of wrinkles and repairing damage due to sun and environmental factors. Alpha-Bisabolol natural is very gentle on skin and can be used twice a day without irritation.
Alpha-Bisabolol can also be added to products to help decrease natural product aroma. It has a naturally sweet, woodsy aroma which works as a deodorizer, helping to balance out natural product scents.
Alpha-Bisabolol is also said to help increase the absorption rates of other active ingredients. This is why it is often paired with other actives like Tetrahexyldexyl Acetate (oil soluble vitamin c), retinaldehyde, astaxanthin, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acids.
In addition to the strong anti-inflammatory markers, Alpha-Bisabolol has been proven to specifically reduce fungi, candida albicans, and gram-positive bacteria. This makes it an excellent addition to products such as wound healing salves and tattoo care products.
The NIH has published a study on alpha-bisabolol in skincare formulations, notating the benefits of potent ability to help sooth irritated skin, reducing inflammation in individuals with eczema and dermatitis. They also studied the benefits on the treatment of melasma, stating that individuals saw an improvement in facial texture, skin oiliness, brightness, hydrated skin and overall appearance.
Formulation Notes:
Alpha-Bisabolol should be added in the oil phase of your formulations. Add in when cooling the oils down to maintain maximum effectiveness.
This can very easily be added to a serum or lotion base, or into an oil based facial moisturizer. Usage rate is a max of 1% so a little goes a long way.
Alpha Bisabolol complies with the European Cosmetics Regulation No.2023/1115 EC, regarding deforestation-free products. Meets the requirements for Halal and Kosher since it isn’t derived from animals or animal by-products, it does not contain ethanol or ethanol is not used in its manufacturing process and the equipment is manufacturing equipment is cleaned to avoid any cross contamination.
Sustainability and Responsible Harvesting Notes:
“The cadeia tree (Eremanthus erythropappus) is a native species from Brazil, with natural occurrences mainly in Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra da Espinhaço in the State of Minas Gerais. The essential oil extracted from this wood is rich in alpha-(-)-bisabolol, which is widely used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries due to its well-known anti[1]inflammatory properties.
Through appropriate stewardship techniques, it is possible to explore this natural resource according to sustainable practices in Brazil. Thanks to research supported by Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), ideal approaches to the conservation of natural forests of candeia have been defined.
As the main result, this research contributed to the creation of an exclusive legislation, which established the conditions for the sustainable use of this species. Furthermore, a program committed to sustainability was started in 2002 to plant candeia and since then large sums has been invested in the preparation of seedling nursery and plant cultivation.
This work, which continues to be developed, includes the production and the distribution of more than 100,000 seedlings per year, and is conducted on a farm in Baependi – Minas Gerais, where experimental studies are also developed in partnership with UFLA, focusing on quality and its establishment after planting. Currently over one million seedlings have been planted, ensuring sustainability in the production of natural alpha bisabolol.
Since the beginning, we aim to ensure the existence of the product in the future, and as a result of this successful work, the candeia tree never figured in the list of plant species threatened with extinction.”
