Olive oil…who doesn’t know about and love olive oil, right? Thick, rich, light yellow to dark green in color, this oil is the premier oil to be the base of any liquid or bar soap, body lotion, creams, face scrubs, serums, and even your evening pasta dish. Olive oil has a high level of oleic acid, which means it will condition the hair and skin beautifully without leaving that greasy feeling.
What makes organic extra virgin olive oil different from true olive or pomace olive oil?
Extra virgin organic olive oil is the highest quality, first press of the olive, so be sure to add this oil in the cooler phases of your formulas to retain the beautiful color and light olive scent. Extra Virgin indicates the least amount of processing and the most amount of fatty acids retained. Olives are generally pressed multiple times in order to extract all the goodness. Extra virgin is the first. This gives OEVOO the highest level of olive flavor and aroma, and makes is the most translucent green of the olive oils.
True olive is also called pomace olive. That is the second or third pressing of the olives. This makes pomace olive oil darker in color; it can have some thickness or what looks like sediment to it; it also has a more muddy aroma and not as light and clean as the organic extra virgin.
Which olive oil is better for soap making, organic extra virgin or pomace olive oil?
Either versions of our olive oils can be used in soap making, both cold and hot process soaps. Organic EV Olive for soap making can leave your bar with a slight green tint, depending on how much olive oil is in your formula and if you are adding colors or not. Organic EV Olive is the better olive to use if you are making Aleppo soap, as you want that to be a pure and clean as possible. It is also the better option for facial bars or bars targeting sensitive skin or skin concerns such as eczema or psoriasis. Organic EV Olive creates more gentle bars, with creamy low bubbles and exceptional moisture.
Organic EV Olive can create slightly faster trace, so you will need to watch this when making soap bars. Pomace olive oil has a slower trace, allowing more time for special colors and designs. If you want to incorporate the higher benefit levels of OEVOO but still have slower trace and lower cost margin, try blending both OEVOO and pomace at 70% pomace and 30% OEVOO. That way you get the best of both worlds.
Olive oil, both OEVOO and pomace, is naturally high in stearic acid. Stearic acid is used both in anti-aging skincare products and in cold processed soap bars. When you use an oil that is high in stearic acid in soap bars, that oil increases the surfactant capabilities of the bar and it increases the hardness. Olive oil is an excellent source of stearic acid, and we do also sell pure stearic acid that you can use in soap making, candle making, perfume making, and in your body butters or lotions. Stearic acid has strong emollient properties and when used in skincare products helps to increase the moisture level on the skin.
Why is organic extra virgin olive so good for skin and hair?
Organic extra virgin olive oil makes a great skincare ingredient. EV Olive oil has a high fatty acid profile, which means that it is extremely nourishing for the skin and can help combat aging and acne damage. Three excellent fatty acids for skin care formulations found in organic extra virgin olive oil are oleic acid, stearic acid and linoleic acid.
Oleic acid helps as a moisturizer, boosts hair growth, has high levels of anti-oxidants to help slow down the signs of aging, excellent anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe the skin when battling things like eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
Stearic acid has strong emollient properties and when used in skincare products helps to increase the moisture level on the skin.
Linoleic Acid is a powerhouse fatty acid. Products containing ingredients that are high in linoleic help to combat acne, have high levels of anti-inflammatories, softens the skin and helps to heal the skin. Linoleic acid is also known as vitamin F.
How can I use organic extra virgin olive in my skincare formulas?

Is organic extra virgin olive oil cold pressed or expeller pressed?
Organic EV olive oil is cold pressed, meaning no heat or chemicals are used in the processing of our organic ev olive. This makes it incredibly clean for skincare formulations, retaining all the naturally occurring fatty acids and skin beneficial compounds. It also makes the ingredient very consistent batch to batch. You can expect to have consistent formulations when you use organic EV olive oil purchased from Shay, as we always source ours from the same manufacturer. We believe it is important to maintain consistency in manufacturing so you have consistency in your formulas.
Is our organic extra virgin olive oil food grade?
Extra virgin olive oil is a food-grade organic oil, which means you can use it for more than just skincare products. We are not a food or supplement certified facility so none of our products will come with food or supplement labeling or documentation.
