We have partnered with an innovative biodynamic farm in Oregon to bring in more organic hydrolats for your custom formulas.
What is a hydrolat versus hydrosol versus plant water?
I get this question a lot and the distinction is important. All three are water based products that exhibit plant benefits. The difference is in the concentration and how they are made.
We carry hydrolats, which can also be called hydrosols. We do not carry plant waters.
When making steam distilled essential oils, the heavy oils fall to the bottom and the steam that rises to the top is called a hydrolat (or hydrosol). The hydrosols that we carry are these 100% pure steam by-product of the plant- no water added, no preservatives needed as these are 100% steam, no essential oil added.
Plant waters can sometimes be hydrolats/hydrosols, but often they are hydrolats/hydrosols that have been diluted with plain water and then a preservative added. When you are working with hydrolats/hydrosols, you do not need a preservative as water has not been added. Yes, a hydrolat/hydrosol looks like water, but it is pure steam extract (yes, technically water) and not blended with deionized water.
How to use a Hydrolat
You can use hydrolats on their own. Just bottle with a spray and your customers can use them to spray their face, scalp, shoes, pillows, cars, stinky gym bags…you name it.
You can blend it with deionized water then add in essential oils to create a different aroma. Always, always, always add a preservative if you add any water to the product. If you are only adding essential oil, you do not have to add a preservative.
You can substitute some or all of the water in your emulsified formulas. If you do this, your INCI for the water portion will be the INCI of the hydrolat as it will overtake (merge with) the water and the “water” portion just is listed as the hydrolat INCI.
You can use it in formulas to help dilution and to enhance the end product with the plant properties.
Why should you use a hydrolat instead of just water?
Beautiful, rad, plant power, that is why! Each of our organic hydrolats all contribute their own plant power.
New Organic Hydrolats
We have three new ones:
Organic Tulsi (known as Holy Basil)- Tulsi hydrolat/hydrosol is an excellent way to get the benefits of holy basil without having the strong smell of the essential oil. Tulis is also known as Holy Basil, or the Queen of Herbs. We carry both Holy Basil essential oil and Organic Tulsi (Holy Basil) hydrolat simply because holy basil is incredibly good for the skin and mental health.
Organic Cucumber- Cool as a cucumber, right? That is exactly what Organic Cucumber Hydrolat does for your skin and hair! Cooling, soothing, calming, reduces redness, increases hydration; all beautiful benefits.
Organic Hemp- Hemp hydrolat/hydrosol is an excellent way to get the benefits of hemp without having the strong smell of hemp. Our Organic Hemp Hydrosol has a very mellow aroma of pine, herbs and freshness and would pair beautifully with our excellent Dark Patchouli and Oregon Spearmint Essential oils. Use as a pillow spray, face mist, body hydrator, or as the water base for any one of your many skincare formulas!
