Two New Preservatives!

two-new-preservatives

We are constantly striving to increase our product line, bringing on new ingredients to help you create fabulous products.

Please welcome two new preservatives. Both are ideal for natural and organic products; both are water soluble; both are easy to add; both are used at less than 2%.

We are introducing:

Pre-Solubilized Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate– we have always carried Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate in their pure, dry formats. These are very easy to use on their own, but you do have to solubilize them before you can use them.

To resolve this issue, we offer the pre-solubilized version. This is made using Benzyl Alcohol and a little bit of water. Benzyl Alcohol is naturally found in essential oils and some fruits. Benzyl Alcohol works to solubilize the dry ingredients, and it also boosts the performance of this preservative.

Pre-Solubilized Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate is:

  • Applicable for natural and organic skincare and hair care formulations
  • Easy to use
  • Product is stable for applications between 80°C/176°F to 0°C/32°F
  • Has a suggested level of usage of 0.4-2%
  • Ideal for products with a finished pH of 5.5 or lower
  • Can be used on wipes

The other new preservative is similar, with the exception of the finished pH.

BDHA Benzyl Alcohol and Dehydroacetic Acid

This is similar to the one above, with the exception that Dehydroacetic Acid is not derived from petroleum, whereas Sodium Benzoate is derived from petroleum-based ingredients.

Sodium Benzoate is synthetically derived from Benzoic Acid and Sodium Hydrate. Benzoic acid is originally derived from toluene, which is petroleum-derived; however, through the fermentation process, there is zero residual petroleum in the finished product.

Potassium Sorbate is synthetically produced via the reaction of Sorbic Acid and Potassium Hydroxide.

There is no residual petroleum in the finished product, but if you follow the chain back far enough, you will find an original petroleum source.

BDHA is an extremely popular and very easy-to-use preservative system. You may also know it as Geogard 221.

BDHA is extremely easy to use and will not affect the end color or texture of your product.

BDHA is:

  • Applicable for natural and organic skincare and hair care formulations
  • Easy to use
  • Product is stable for applications between 45°C/113°F to 80°C/176°F
  • Has a suggested level of usage of 0.3-0.8%
  • Ideal for products with a finished pH of 5.0-6.5 or lower
