Tartaric Acid is a natural source for AHA (alpha hydroxy acids). AHA’s are used in my skincare products to help remove aging skin cells, and to encourage brighter, firmer skin to the surface. Tartaric Acid has extremely effective natural exfoliating and anti-oxidant properties.
Our Tartaric Acid is derived from grapes that have been used in the wine making process. This means that our Tartaric Acid is a 2nd phase ingredient, making it more sustainable as it uses grapes already processed once for wine making.
AHA’s are incorporated into skincare products to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, to reduce acne, to help reduce the size of larger pores, to promote brighter more even skin tone, and to help reduce hyperpigmentation. You can include Tartaric Acid in any leave in or wash-off product, although the wash-off product should have uses where it can remain on the skin for a little while in order to do its work (meaning don’t just put AHA’s in a wash off face wash, put in a cream based face wash that the customer can allow to sit for a little while and work away on the dead skin).
Natural AHA’s are derived from fruit acids, malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and many others. These versions of AHA’s are considered milder on the skin as they are 100% naturally derived. You can get chemical based AHA’s, which are very effective, but they can cause sensitivity when used too frequently. Natural AHA products can be used daily by most skin types.
Exfoliating the skin is an integral part of rejuvenating the skin. We do a lot of damage to our skin, from the sun exposure to the chemicals in our air, food and some skincare products. Using formulas with natural exfoliation properties encourages cell turnover and helps to repair our skin from all that damage. In addition, frequent exfoliation, both from a physical exfoliant like a face scrub and “chemical” exfoliations like an alpha hydroxy cream, helps to having healthier skin over the long term. When I say “chemical” exfoliations, this includes products made with our natural AHA’s like Tartaric Acid.
AHA products made from natural ingredients such as Tartaric Acid are also excellent at helping to combat extremely dry skin and Karatosis Pilaris (those annoying red bumps on the backs of arms, thighs, and cheeks). Gentle, routine exfoliation and hydration can help this tremendously. Incorporating Tataric Acid into products like a whipped body butter (think Organic Shea Butter, Cupuacu Butter, Sunflower Wax, Daikon Seed Extract, Organic Babassu Oil, Organic Moringa Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, then actives like Tartaric Acid, Fruit Enzyme Extract, with a natural preservative like Leucidal Complete) can help reduce those bumps, soften and soothe the skin. The immense hydration from the natural oils and butters coupled with the plant based exfoliants work together to sluff off dead skin and re-pack with hydration. The Cupuacu butter is one of the best ones, as it literally melts right into your skin.
Suggested Usage:
Remember that 10% total AHA’s in any product is the max allowed. Be careful to always stay under that as you are combining ingredients.
Tartaric Acid can be used as the sole AHA in a product if you like. You can include 5-10% of your total formula.
To use Tartaric Acid in your skincare formulas you will have to dilute the crystals in water first, then incorporate that solution into your final product. Tartaric Acid also works as a pH adjuster, so it will also help to stabilize your product.
Tartaric Acid is sold in ½-pound biodegradable bags, 1-pound biodegradable bags, 5-pound biodegradable bags, 25-pound, and 50-pound sizes. Any orders larger than 750-pounds please email us for pricing.
