Cedar is probably one of my most favorite smells. I grew up in Central Oregon so the smell of cedar just reminds me of clean, fresh, high desert air. Cedarwood has recently come into its own for its bug repellant properties. We have always known that cedar chips are excellent pet bed material, and we line our flower beds with cedar chips to keep the bugs away, but cedarwood oil in a spray makes an excellent flea and tick deterrent for our pets, back yards, and houses—plus it makes everything smell great. Prefer a non-essential oil cedar fragrance? We carry that, too!
In addition to repelling bugs, cedarwood essential oil should be incorporated into products to help:
Combat eczema and psoriasis- Cedar can be added into a goat’s milk soap bar (made from our melt-and-pour base, of course), with some added organic sea buckthorn (natural vitamin c), and organic tamanu (Polynesian healing oil) oils. Maybe make a couple essential oil blends with cedar and dalmatian sage, or cedar and frankincense.
Promote hair growth- cedar essential oil helps to stimulate hair follicles and increase circulation to the scalp. Blend cedarwood essential oil and peppermint essential oil into an oil base of organic argan, organic castor, Daikon radish seed extract, organic baobab oil, Meadofoam seed oil, and organic coconut to create a hair mask or hair oil treatment.
Soothe dry skin- just like cedarwood essential oil will stimulate circulation to the scalp, cedarwood essential oil also helps to increase circulation to the body. Blend into our lotion or shower gel base, or add to our body butter base to ease dry skin.
As a natural deodorant- make this with our organic shea butter, organic mango butter, organic coconut oil, a little organic beeswax and organic castor oil and a blend of cedarwood essential oil, rosemary essential oil, peppermint essential oil or spearmint essential oils.
Acne skin is exacerbated by a lack of linolenic acid and bacteria left on the skin. Cedarwood would make an excellent addition to an organic extra virgin coconut oil based facial oil cleanser to help hydrate the skin at the same time as combating bacteria.
Anxiety and focus issues- create a beautiful essential oil blend of cedarwood essential oil, vetiver essential oil, and organic Buena vista lavender essential oil to go into a diffuser.
As a bug repellant, there are many formulas but the easiest is just a 2-5% concentration of cedarwood into any kind of spray or wash. You can use our body wash base, add in some natural oils like organic argan or organic sunflower, and make a great smelling pet wash that will also help to repel bugs.
Essential oils are sold in 1-ounce amber glass bottles, 4-ounce amber glass bottles, 8-ounce amber glass bottles, 16-ounce amber glass bottles, 5-pound, 10-pound, and 25-pound sizes. 25 pound sizes may have a later ship date depending on stock on hand. For 100-pound sizes or larger, please email is at orders@shayandcompany.com.
Do not apply juniperus virginiana oil directly to skin. Most essential oils are not designed to be applied directly, rather they are designed to be mixed with a carrier oil such as our organic sunflower or organic jojoba oils. Always perform a small patch test when applying to skin.
Do not take internally unless you are licensed to apply them as such.
