COLORANTS

The natural world is full of so many amazing natural colorants. We believe in what the Earth gives us, and believe they make the best colors. You can find a variety of conventional and certified organic natural food powders that work as colorants AND as skincare ingredients. The benefit of using a plant as your colorant also means you get the benefits of those plants.

We know that many of you are looking for micas and glitters. We have chosen to stay with the natural and organic colorants, as that is our specialty. There are many companies out there where you can get the full array of synthetic colors.

To help you learn more about using natural plant-based colorants in your soaps we have a book here written by a natural soap maker out of Colorado! Kandra has been making soap with natural colorants since 2010. She is the proud mother of 3 homeschooled children and lives with her husband in Denver, Colorado. Her struggles with finding a perfect reproducible purple started her down her path to color blending, finding new ways to create soap colors with all-natural ingredients, and have introduced her to lifelong along the way. She wrote this guide to natural colors with the hopes of sharing her joy of soapmaking, nature, and the combination of her artistic passions with other soap makers. Kandra’s natural soap colors have been brightening the showers and sinks of her customers for years, and now they can find a new glory in your soaps! This book a guide to help you understand how to extract colors from nature through infusions, teas, decoctions, and botanicals. It will help you to not only have a better understanding of the process but provide the skills you need to go beyond simply following instructions from a recipe. You will have a better understanding of how your ingredients affect the color of your soap and how to create your own unique soap colors.

Choosing the right ingredient

The questions our customers ask before their first bulk order.

What's the difference between virgin, refined and cold-pressed?

Cold-pressed and virgin oils keep more of the plant's colour, scent and unsaponifiables, which makes them the better choice for leave-on skin and hair products. Refined oils are filtered for a lighter colour, neutral scent and longer shelf life — the safer pick for soap, candles and anything you intend to scent yourself. Expeller-pressed sits between the two: mechanically pressed with no solvents, but heat is generated in the process.

Which oils should I start with for soap making?

Refined avocado, apricot kernel and babassu cover most cold-process recipes — a soft oil, a light conditioning oil and a hard oil for bar firmness. Babassu is our recommended palm alternative.

Do you supply certificates of analysis and lot traceability?

Yes. Every shipment lists its lot number on the invoice, and a COA — plus a GC/MS report where applicable — is available on request for any lot. Our USDA Organic handler certificate is renewed annually and linked in the footer.

How do I order 55-gallon drums or pallets?

Drums and pallet quantities are quoted directly so freight can be priced properly. Call (503) 653-1155 or email us with the ingredient, the quantity and your delivery ZIP, and we will come back within one business day.

Can I get samples before committing to bulk?

Almost everything is stocked in a 4 oz size for exactly this reason. Order the small size, test your formula, then scale to gallons or drums — on the same lot wherever stock allows.
