What is sal butter? I get that question a lot when customers come into the store. Sal butter is extracted from the Shorea tree in India. Sal butter is an excellent alternative to shea butter or cocoa butter for your skincare formulations as it is firm butter that blends well but is less temperature sensitive than coconut oil or shea butter. Sal butter is also very consistent in texture, color, scent and hardness. It does not have as much natural fluctuations such as other nut butters.

Sal butter is a white to light cream colored nut butter, with almost no scent. You can blend this with any other butter or oil to create a creamy, pliable texture that has a high level of natural skin hydration. Suggested use for sal butter is 3-5% for all skin care products, and up to 100% for soap bars.

Sal butter would make an excellent ingredient in any body butter that is designed to be used for:
Sunburns
Dry skin
Eczema, psoriasis
Damaged, rough skin
Bug bites
Aging, wrinkled skin
Dry hair

Sal butter is said to help improve skin’s natural elasticity and to help hydrate and heal damaged hair. Try adding sal butter to your hair mask or shampoo bar formulations to help repair damaged hair.

Sal butter is also an excellent source of both stearic and oleic acids. These are essential fatty acids that enable our skin to stay healthy and youthful. These are also excellent attributes for acne prone skin care. Consider including sal butter in an acne spot cream or acne fighting body butter. Blend with some Oregon Hazelnut Oil (a natural astringent) and add in essential oils like tea tree, eucalyptus and lavender to help soothe inflamed, oily skin.

Sal butter is sold in 1 pound, 5-pound, and 55-pound boxes Please email us directly for orders over 5 55-pound boxes.
